Over the years, I kept searching for more effective forms of healing--both for myself and for the people I worked with. I've tried a lot of different practices--Buddhist meditation, Qi Gong, guided imagery, massage, cranial sacral therapy, Reiki, shamanic healing, Holotropic breathwork, talk therapy, hypnotherapy.... I found some more helpful than others.
It was through a number of personal losses and changes that I found myself wanting to work more with animals. So, following an advanced Shamanic Training I did in 2013, I began to offer treatments to dogs and cats. I found myself intrigued and wanting to do more. I wasn't certain though, that Shamanic healing was the right fit for me in this work.
A number of years ago, I'd read the book "Animal Reiki" by Elizabeth Fulton and Kathleen Prasad. It piqued my curiosity, but at the time, I wasn't able to find anyone who was teaching Reiki for animals. But the interest stayed.
In January of 2014, I found out that Kathleen was teaching an Animal Reiki correspondence course. I signed up for it and was immediately hooked. As part of the course, we needed to complete some animal Reiki sessions. I worked first with my own cats, then started going into the Qualicum Cat Rescue to complete the rest of the treatments. I loved the experiences so much, that I decided to commit to the 6 month Animal Reiki Internship. I've already completed the 50 sessions needed for this training, and will complete the course in September of this year.
What Kathleen teaches is essentially meditation with animals. With several decades of meditation practice behind me, this approach fits well for me. In addition, it means that hands-on work isn't necessary. It's left up to the animal as to whether they want to receive touch. So, Reiki can easily be shared with animals that have been traumatized or who are fearful.
Providing treatment in this way feels so respectful. It also means that it's not necessary for me to figure anything out, or send Reiki to a specific part of the body. There's a deep trust that the synergy between the animal and Reiki will provide what's needed. All I need to do is to still my mind and create an intention to be an open channel for the healing energy. I ask the animal for permission to work with them, and if they consent, I invite them into the healing space.
I've witnessed some subtle and some amazing changes happen for animals I've worked with...but more about that in the next post.
